Historical Background

Elderberry and echinacea are the two flagship winter herbs of European and North American folk medicine. This decoction pairs cooked elderberries with echinacea and ginger for a traditional cold-season cup.

Traditional purpose: A traditional winter wellness cup — cultural comfort, not a proven preventative.

Preparation

  1. 1

Combine elderberries, echinacea, ginger, and cinnamon with the water.

  2. 2

Bring to a boil, then simmer, covered, 15 minutes.

  3. 3

Remove from heat and steep, covered, 5 minutes more.

  4. 4

Strain; sweeten with honey. Use only ripe, cooked berries.

Serving: One warm cup daily during cold season.

Substitutions

  • Rosehip for vitamin C tradition and tartness
  • Add a slice of lemon before serving

Storage

Prepare fresh; dried berries keep up to a year sealed.

Safety Notices

Use only ripe, cooked elderberries — raw berries cause nausea. Avoid in autoimmune disease without supervision. Not a cure or preventative for colds, flu, or COVID-19; see a clinician for severe or persistent symptoms.
