Historical Background

Saffron milk (doodh-e-zaferan) has been a treasured Persian and South Asian drink for centuries, the world's most precious spice infused into warm milk for mood, warmth, and celebration. A few threads suffuse a whole cup with golden color.

Traditional purpose: Warmth, mood, and celebratory comfort

Preparation

  1. 1

Lightly crush the saffron threads and steep in 2 tbsp warm milk for 5 minutes.

  2. 2

In a saucepan, warm 1 cup milk with crushed cardamom over low heat.

  3. 3

Add the saffron infusion and warm gently 5–7 minutes (do not boil).

  4. 4

Strain into a cup; sweeten with honey and garnish with crushed pistachio.

Serving: Serve warm in a small cup; a golden, celebratory, caffeine-free treat.

Substitutions

  • Oat milk for a vegan version
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon

Storage

Best fresh; saffron threads store airtight, away from light.

Safety Notices

Generally very safe in culinary amounts; saffron may interact with mood and blood-pressure drugs and is uterotonic at very high doses — avoid medicinal doses in pregnancy. Educational use only — not medical advice.
