Historical Background

Ashwagandha is a classic Ayurvedic rasayana taken with warm milk in the evening for calm and restorative sleep. This dairy-free version simmers the root with ginger for an earthy, grounding cup.

Traditional purpose: Traditionally taken to ease the nervous system into evening and support restful sleep.

Preparation

  1. 1

Simmer the ashwagandha root and ginger in the water, covered, for 10–12 minutes.

  2. 2

Remove from heat and steep, covered, 5 minutes more.

  3. 3

Strain; add cardamom or cinnamon and warm milk if desired.

  4. 4

    Sip 30–60 minutes before bed.

Serving: Best in the evening; avoid combining with sedative medications without advice.

Substitutions

  • Rooibos as a base if ashwagandha is too bitter
  • A pinch of nutmeg for extra warmth

Storage

Prepare fresh; store dried root sealed.

Safety Notices

Avoid with autoimmune flares, hyperthyroidism, or sedative medications without supervision. Not for pregnancy or children. Not a treatment for anxiety, insomnia, or low testosterone.
