Yin Qiao-Style Cold-Onset Decoction

A simplified interpretation of the classic TCM cold-onset pairing of forsythia fruit and honeysuckle, with mint and licorice for a clearer throat.

Historical Background

Yin Qiao San is among the most famous TCM formulas for the early stage of a wind-heat cold — sore throat, feverish onset — featuring forsythia (Lian Qiao) and honeysuckle (Jin Yin Hua).

Traditional purpose: Early-stage cold with sore throat (traditional)

Preparation

    Briefly simmer forsythia and honeysuckle (and licorice) for 8-10 minutes.

  2. 2

    Remove from heat, add the mint, cover, and steep a further 5 minutes.

  3. 3

    Strain and sip warm.

Serving: Warm, at the first sign of a cold, one cup two to three times a day for a short period.

Substitutions

  • Chrysanthemum for a milder version
  • A little ginger for a warming note

Use fresh.
