Elecampane & Marshmallow Cough Decoction

A warming decoction of elecampane root softened with marshmallow and honey, traditionally used for stubborn, chesty coughs.

Historical Background

Elecampane was the European chest herb, candied and syruped for centuries; here it is balanced with demulcent marshmallow to make a gentler respiratory decoction.

Traditional purpose: Cough and chest congestion (traditional)

Preparation

    Simmer elecampane and marshmallow (and licorice if using) gently in water for 15-20 minutes.

    Strain into a cup.

    Cool slightly, stir in honey, and sip warm.

Serving: Half a cup, two to three times a day, short-term.

Substitutions

  • Mullein root
  • Plantain leaf for a gentler version

Storage

Use fresh.
